When I made my Skull Belt, my daughter asked if I’m going to make her a belt as well. I of course answered that she will get her own belt. And promptly forgot about that. As kids have an amazing memory, when they so choose, she has been reminding me about that promise and now I decided to make a quick belt for her.
This was supposed to be a very quick project, but it ended up taking much longer than I thought. I wasn’t going to stitch it, but when I remembered that I have this awesome rainbow coloured thread I just had to use it for this. Over 7 meters of thread and couple of blistered fingers later, my daughter had a very nice belt to wear for school.
The belt is 35mm wide and looks very substantial on her. The thread goes through all the colors of the rainbow, and because of that I had to sew it all in one long go.I used 4mm thick bridle leather as I have loads of it and it’s very durable. Overall I’m happy, and my daughter seems to be happy as well.
Build Log:
A very simple start: 35mm wide long strip of bridle leather, with one end finished to round and the other pointy.The buckle side needed some skiving to be able to bend around the bar. To make it even more flexible around the buckle’s bar, I added a groove as well. A rough test: I’ll use Chicago screws and brass buckle for the belt.After I had hammered the holes in, I also pressed the same 3D printed stamp on the belt as I used for her bag earlier.To finish the tooling, I added a groove to the edges with 2mm spacing.And here the real job begins… This was a lot of sewing.I had to use my improvised pulled system to keep the belt from flopping around while sewing.It attaches to the ceiling, and pulls whatever you are sewing upwards to give clear visibility and access.Sewing done. the rainbow thread looks great especially after I have hammered it flat with my stitch flattening tool.Even the backside looks presentable now.Done. It turned out much nicer than I had planned, but also took much longer time.I was worried that the bridle leather would be too stiff, but it moves nicely when the strap is this narrow.My daughter is happy, and looks cool as heck!
