Silfer Works Cap

As my son’s teddy got a fancy sombrero, I thought that now was my turn to get a hat! I got new maker’s marks laser engraved (I will post about these soon!), so I wanted to test the larger one on a small project. I don’t have a cap for the autumn, so now was the time to customise one that shows off my mark.

It turned out ok. I’m still not convinced that I chose the correct leather thickness or colour for this.
I chose to use saddle stitch for attaching the leather patch. It was incredibly tricky to sew as I couldn’t see both sides of the piece.

Build Log:

To start off, I removed the handle from my stamp and pressed it into the leather with my fly press.
It left a crisp mark, but the colour and thickness of the leather had its limitations. It would have been much clearer with thicker brown leather with some antique added on top.
I made a simple template to center the design…
… and of course mark the line for cutting the patch.
After cutting the patch, I marked the stitch line with a Japanese style groover…
… and bevelled the edges with a size 1 beveller.
The edges were burnished with tokonole burnishing cream and a quick slick with a slicker.
The stitch holes were done with 3.5mm bricking irons.
I chose to use pretty thick thread as I thought it would suit the style better. Sewing this was a PAIN!
The sewing turned out ok I guess, but it’s far from perfect. To be honest, I thought it would be worse after I realised how tricky it was.
Well, now I have a cap. Not bad for a couple of hours of work, but I need to think about how to do this properly next time.
