Leather flower for Mother’s Day

Already for couple of years I’ve been making different kinds of Mother’s Day flowers for my wife: anything from 3D printed ones roses, to laser cut wooden flowers that our kids coloured themselves. This year it was leather flowers’ turn.

It’s a very simple construction with a combination of chrome tanned and veg tanned leather scraps.
It wasn’t anything fancy, but fit well with the theme!

Build log:

All you need is cardboard, compass, and a pencil for designing a simple flower.
I dug out all of my chrome tanned scraps that I would never use for anything else. I had some nice colours that would fit well on a flower.
I punched 2mm holes to aid with the cutting…
… and cut the flowers out.
To add some colour I used a natural veg tanned flower to the top that I will dye later.
To tie everything together, I punched a hole to the center for a Chicago screw, and added a round light coloured piece of veg tan on top.
The top flower was dyed red and treated with resolene.
To make the stem I skived some 4mm thick bridle leather to around 2mm thick…
… and shaped it and attached a small carabiner to the end.
To finish the flower off, I of course need some leafs. I didn’t have enough green chrome tan for four leafs, but the good thing is that leafs don’t need to be symmetrical! Three random sized leafs it is then.
Done! Or is it…? The center looks a bit bland.
I added some contour to the center with a shader stamp I use for tooling.
Now it done! As said, it’s nothing fancy but not too bad when considering that it’s made out of scraps. I think next year I need to make some metal flowers…

Wooden sauna curtain

I couldn’t find a good curtain for my sauna, so I decided to build one. Traditionally the curtains are made by crocheting cotton thread, but I decided to do something different. The inspiration came from bead curtains which were popular in the 60’s and 70’s. I needed to find wooden…

Triple Bunk Bed – Build

I made a design for a Triple Bunk Bed in January 2023. Since then my kids have been asking when the bed will be done as they really look forward to it. As the kids were growing out of their current smaller sized beds, I decided that it was time…
