A sauna ladle from the past

I was visiting my childhood home in Finland, and while I was sitting in the sauna I realised that my old sauna ladle was still there. It was made by me when I was around 10 years old, and it has been in my parents sauna ever since. I don’t think it was ever properly used as it didn’t hold enough water, but it has gone through all the heat cycles for the last three decades as it has always been on the top bench of the sauna.

The cup was hammered by hand out of a flat piece of copper and riveted to a mild steel shaft. The shaft was heated and stuck into a mystery piece of wood (most probably pine) that I had rounded on a lathe. Most Finnish kids make these while in school, but I’m still pretty proud how it ended up looking!

(I also made another ladle couple of decades later: https://silfer.works/special-sauna-ladle/)

The old ladle in all it’s glory.
I decided to not clean it, and keep the 30-odd years of patina on it.
The shape was hammered by hand out of a flat piece of bronze and riveted to a mild steel shaft.
I brought it to my own sauna, and gave it the place of honour on the wall. I made a simple holder for it out of Ash tree.
This is what I see now while sitting in the sauna. I wonder what the 10 year old version of me would have thought if he knew where the ladle will end up…
