I had already decided that I’m done with belts for a while, but when I was trying to decide what to give to my father-in-law for his birthday I changed my mind. You can’t go wrong with a belt as a gift.
I chose to make a rather simple design with basket stamped design on it, antique brass hardware, and stitches all around the edges. You might recognise the hardware and leather from my Skull Belt. I was going to do something different, but then in the end chose materials that I knew will work out well.
Simple and stylish design.As I wasn’t 100% sure of the size, I added two additional holes just in case. Happily the sizing was spot on.
Build Log:
I was planning to use the dark brown strap from rocky by Conceria Walpier, but also prepared the cognac coloured one as well just in case.Rough shapes are cut out. I will use four Chicago screws to assemble the belt.The sides are grooved. I will do the proper finishing later.As I wasn’t sure of the exact sizing, I made the belt with 7 holes instead of the usual 5.And my maker’s mark is also stamped on the end.I grooved the edges of the rest of the belt, and also marked the stitching holes. The centerline is marked with a silver pen as a preparation for the stamping.The stamping begins…… and goes on…… until the whole belt is stamped.To make the pattern even more visible, I used Fiebings black antique paste across it all.As a finish I used Fiebings Tan-Kote. I’m not a big fan of acrylic finishes, so Tan-Kote is perfect for this as it is resin-based.I apparently didn’t take one single picture of me stitching the sides. Well, it took 10 metres of thread and many hours. I also stamped the inside of the buckle with a 3D printed die.Done.I’m happy how it turned out and the gift was well-received.
